When life demands you need more than one or even two rows of seats in your vehicle, it’s easy to assume the days of stylish, attractive, and desirable vehicles that you’re proud to own and love to drive around Mississauga, Streetsville, Erin Mills and the Greater Toronto Area are over for the time being. The 2022 Mazda CX-9 shows that doesn’t have to be the case, as this incredibly stylish three-row, seven-seat crossover SUV is as attractive and desirable as it is flexible, capable, and family-friendly.
Here in Canada, we currently have five different versions of the 2022 Mazda CX-9 to choose from that cover the needs of a wide range of potential owners. The first model in the lineup is the CX-9 GS which makes terms like “base model” or “entry-level” sound almost laughable, even though that’s what the GS effectively is. Next up is the GS-L that adds a few extra features for not a lot of extra money could make it look like the sweet spot in the lineup for value for money. The mid-range model is then the GT, and then we have the Kuro, and finally, the top-of-the-range Signature that’s hard to distinguish from a genuine luxury SUV that would inevitably cost considerably more than the Mazda.
A 2.5-litre turbo-four engine is found under the hood of every version of the 2022 Mazda CX-9. This impressive unit produces 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque when it’s being run on 87 octane fuel, but if you run it on premium 93 octane fuel instead it then puts out an even more impressive 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque. All models send their power exclusively to all four wheels through a Skyactiv-Drive 6-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode and a Drive Selection switch, which also comes with paddle shifters from the GS-L trim and higher.
Every CX-9 comes from the factory with an incredibly impressive list of standard safety features that have helped the Mazda earn a full five-star rating from the NHTSA for overall safety and coveted Top Safety Pick+ status from the IIHS. These features include a rearview camera, Dynamic Stability Control, Trailer Stability Assist, Hill Launch Assist, Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert, (adaptive) Mazda Radar Cruise Control, Pedestrian Detection, Distance Recognition Support System, Forward Obstruction Warning, Lane Departure Warning System, a Lane-keep Assist System and more.
The entry-level GS model also comes with standard rain-sensing windshield wipers; LED auto on/off headlights; 17-inch alloy wheels; remote keyless entry; tri-zone climate control; a 10.25-inch color display; heated front seat; and an infotainment system with full Bluetooth connectivity, HD radio, Mazda Connected Services, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility.
At the very least, the 2022 Mazda CX-9 proves that seven-seat practicality doesn’t have to mean a dull, soulless, and functional vehicle that suits a purpose but does little else to excite or delight. The CX-9 is a truly desirable vehicle whether you need to carry seven people or you just need plenty of cargo space, but the only way to truly appreciate it is to come and visit Erin Mills Mazda here at 2400 Motorway Blvd, Mississauga, ON, for a test drive.
