There are loads of options when you’re shopping for a subcompact crossover SUV in Mississauga, or elsewhere in the Greater Toronto Area these days. They mostly fall into two groups of mass-market and luxury, and which you go for will often come down to your budget. But if you want something stylish with good performance and a luxury feel that doesn’t have a luxury price ticket, look as soon as possible at the 2023 Mazda CX-30.
Many small SUVs around today look like they all originated from the same design studio, so where do you turn if you want something that doesn’t conform to the same tired old aesthetic? If you want a subcompact crossover SUV that’s more conventional than polarizing but still manages to be contemporary, desirable, and sporty, the 2023 Mazda CX-30 checks all those boxes and more.
The CX-30 looks lower to the ground than its rivals, and the design leans closer to sporty than rugged. However, the unpainted fender flares hint at something happier to get its feet dirty and hair wet than some of its more urban stylish siblings. There are four versions of the CX-30 to choose from, so it’s up to you whether you prefer the look of the GX, GS, GT, or the range-topping GT Turbo.
Even though there are effectively only three trim levels of GX, GS, and GT, it may be a surprise that the 2023 Mazda CX-30 is available with three different engines. Under the hood of the entry-level CX-30 GX is a 2.0-litre inline-four that provides the little Mazda crossover with 1550 horsepower and 150 lb.-ft. of torque. If you want something a little livelier, the standard powerplant for the GS and GT trim levels upgrade you to a standard 2.5-litre inline-four that develops 191 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque.
The option that appears to bring a fourth trim level into the CX-30 family is a turbocharged version of the 2.5-litre inline-four that results in the GT Turbo version of the Mazda as that’s the only trim level available with the most powerful engine. The turbo gets you 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque with standard 87-octane fuel, or 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. with 93-octane gas. Regardless of engine or trim level, every 2023 Mazda CX-30 sends its power to all four wheels through a standard six-speed automatic transmission.
All versions of the 2023 CX-30 impress with their generous standard specifications that start with all-wheel drive and a full complement of LED lights across the range. The standard safety features are particularly impressive, which helps the CX-30 get top ratings from the IIHS and NHTSA. Standard safety features include a wide-angle rearview camera, automatic emergency braking, active lane control, and adaptive cruise control. All models above the GX also get Forward Pedestrian Detection, Forward Obstruction Warning, Lane Departure Warning System, Lane-keep Assist System, Distance Recognition Support System, and Driver Attention Alert.
The GT ramps things up even further with a standard Traffic Sign Recognition System, 360º View Monitor, and Traffic Jam Assist. The GT also comes with leather upholstery, a 10-way memory power driver’s seat, and a Windshield-projected colour Active Driving Display.
The 2023 Mazda CX-30 is a fantastic combination of style, comfort, quality, performance, and luxury in a subcompact package that’s as happy on the highway as in the town or city.
