Punching above its price ticket

Do you remember when most people in Mississauga, Brampton, Oakville, Milton, and the rest of Canada that didn’t drive trucks were driving sedans? There were good reasons why sedans were as popular as they were back then, and the 2022 Mazda3 is a compact sedan that serves as a great reminder of those reasons. The 2022 Mazda3 Sedan is stylish, capable, very well equipped, and built to a very high standard, and if you didn’t know what it was, you could easily mistake it for something from a luxury brand where you’d be paying a lot more for little more than a luxury badge.

Trim levels

There are five different 2022 Mazda3 Sedan trim levels to choose from this time around, and every one of the five makes a good case for itself. The entry-level GX doesn’t look or feel in any way like a base model, even though technically it is. And of course, the specifications just get better and better as you go up through GS, GS with Luxury Package, GT, and finally to the top-of-the-range GT Turbo. All-wheel-drive is available with the GS, GS with Luxury Package, and GT models, and it’s part of the standard specification for the GT Turbo

Engines and performance

While a lot of small vehicles these days stick with a single-engine across their entire range these days, Mazda spoils us with no fewer than three engines for the 2022 Mazda3 Sedan. The first of the bunch is a naturally aspirated 2.0-litre four-cylinder unit that develops 150 horsepower and 150 lb.-ft. of torque that’s standard under the hood of entry-level GX models. Next up is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder which is standard from the GS and higher which then provides the Mazda3 Sedan with 186 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque. Last up is a 2.5-litre turbo-four that’s good for 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque with premium 93-octane fuel, and this one is the standard unit for the 2022 Mazda3 GT Turbo.

Most models get a standard six-speed automatic transmission, but the entry-level GX comes with a six-speed manual that can be upgraded to the automatic if you prefer. All models are front-wheel drive with all-wheel-drive available, apart from the entry-level GX which is exclusively front-drive, and the GT Turbo that gets AWD as part of its standard specification.

Features and equipment

All models come complete with Mazda’s i-Activsense suite of advanced safety features that have helped the Mazda3 get a full five-star rating for overall safety from the NHTSA and the IIHS top rating of Top Safety Pick+. Every Mazda3 Sedan, therefore, comes with automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, active lane control, adaptive cruise control, a rearview camera, an Advanced Blind Spot Monitoring System, Rear Cross Traffic Alert, and plenty more.

Other standard features you can expect with even the most affordable version of the Mazda3 Sedan include an 8.8-inch centre display for the Mazda Connect infotainment system, push-button start, remote keyless illuminated entry, two front USB inputs, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Mazda Harmonics 8-speaker audio, digital meter-set with 7-inch LCD display, electronic parking brake, air conditioning, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and heated front seats.
