Beauty that's more than skin-deep
Different automakers often go in different directions when designing a compact crossover SUV. Mazda is a manufacturer that emphasizes style and excellent driving characteristics, and the 2024 Mazda CX-5 is a prime example of that philosophy. The style element soon becomes apparent when you see a CX-5 on the road in Mississauga or anywhere in the Greater Toronto Area, not to mention just how much you’ll appreciate the driver-centric aspects of the Mazda when you get behind the wheel.
Broad appeal
There's a strong identity running through the seven available trim levels in the 2024 Mazda CX-5 lineup, which is good news if your budget is limited as the lower and higher trim levels are just as stylish and don't look like corners have been cut to achieve a lower price. However, there is a significant difference in price between the entry-level and top trim level, so there are CX-5 models to suit a wide range of budgets that all look sensational.
All seven of the trim levels offered in the 2024 Mazda CX-5 lineup get AWD as part of their standard specification, and you don't have to go up the trim levels for a larger touchscreen either. The lineup starts with the entry-level GX; from there, the range goes to the GS, Kuro, GT, Sport Design, the SUNA Edition (new for 2024), and top-of-the-range Signature.
The driving experience
Before you consider the two available engines and how they perform, Mazda has covered the basics so that the 2024 CX-5 always delivers an exceptional driving experience at every level. The handling is superb for a high-riding crossover SUV, the body roll is almost undetectable in normal circumstances, and the steering is precise enough to connect the driver with the vehicle and the road in a way rarely found in the CX-5's class.
The standard powerplant for every 2024 Mazda CX-5 apart from the Sport Design, SUNA Edition, and range-topping Signature is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder that puts out 187 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque, and every model sends its power to all four wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission. If you'd prefer something more powerful, a 2.5-litre turbo-four with 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. of torque is standard for the Sport Design, SUNA Edition, and Signature trim levels. Even more power is available by using 95 octane premium gas, which increases the engine's output to 250 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque.
From well-equipped to seriously impressive
The most affordable 2024 Mazda CX-5 certainly isn't a stripped-down fleet-focused model where low prices are the main attraction. With standard AWD, heated front seats, and an infotainment system with a 10.25-inch screen, and Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, the GX is excellent value for money and well worth considering.
However, it will be hard to resist stepping up to at least the GS to get a power programmable liftgate, leatherette-trimmed upholstery with Grand Lux Suede inserts, and a heated steering wheel for not a lot extra. If you like the finer things in life, the Sport Design and Signature models are bursting with features and luxury appointments. However, the Signature does get you the sensational turbocharged engine as part of its standard equipment that's hard to pass up once you've driven it.
