A highly-desirable new direction
The 2024 Mazda CX-50 is a recent addition to the Mazda family that gives you what you’ve been asking for: genuine off-road capability! The stylish CX-50 has all the panache of other Mazda crossovers for cruising around the streets of Mississauga and other urban areas in the Greater Toronto Area. However, the CX-50 is also an adventure lifestyle vehicle with more off-road capability than Mazda has ever offered before.
Trim levels and styling
Designers haven't abandoned the traditional Mazda style to create a lifestyle adventure, which is just as well, as Mazdas are some of the most stylish and attractive models in their various classes. However, the company has enhanced the popular sleek, sporty, and futuristic look with squared-off black cladding over the wheels, bulging fenders, and a wing grille that extends its tips under the headlights. You'll also see vertical air intakes below those headlights, and the bumpers appear to ride higher than usual, adorned with faux skid plates.
It's common for new models to only be available in a few trim levels to start with, and Mazda stuck to that blueprint last year here in Canada as the CX-50 was available in two high-spec trim levels. However, there are three trim levels this year, plus you can also add a turbocharged engine to a trim to create an entirely different model. The four effective trim levels for 2024 are the GS-L, GT, GT Turbo, and range-topping Meridian.
The 2024 Mazda CX-50 nails its colours firmly to the adventure mast with its drivetrain, as all CX-50 trim levels come with Mazda's i-ACTIV AWD as part of their standard specification, with two different powerplants available. The AWD system is similar to other Mazdas, but this one sports a more advanced traction control system to better handle off-road challenges. There's also a drive-mode toggle in the console for choosing between Normal, Sport, Towing, and Off-Road driving, which uses torque vectoring to shift torque from the rear axle at a stop to the front wheels as speed increases.
The standard powerplant for the latest CX-50 is a 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine that produces 187 horsepower and 186 lb.-ft. of torque. The alternative – for the GT trim and Meridian only – is a 2.5-litre twin-scroll turbo-four, which provides the CX-50 with 256 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque using 93 octane gas, or 227 horsepower and 310 lb.-ft. with 87 octane gas.
Features and equipment
It feels wrong to call the GS-L version of the 2024 Mazda CX-50 a base model because its standard specification is extremely impressive. Standard equipment includes AWD, 17-inch alloys, LED headlights, keyless entry, four USB ports, a 10.25-inch display infotainment system with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, Radar Cruise Control with Stop and Go, a power liftgate, a power-sliding panoramic moonroof, and automatic dual-zone climate control.
The GT versions of the CX-50 get seriously luxurious with upscale features which include genuine leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, navigation, a 12-speaker Bose sound system, wireless phone charging, SiriusXM Satellite Radio, Traffic Plus, and Travel Link services, a driver's memory seat and more. The Meridian is largely a styling upgrade on GT models with the likes of Terracotta leather upholstery, 18-inch metallic black alloy wheels, hood graphics, and more.
